How to Register as a Vendor in Alabama

What it's for

Alabama Buys is the state's eProcurement system, where suppliers "register, respond to bid opportunities, and manage their business interactions online." The state says plainly: "Suppliers interested in responding to State of Alabama's solicitations must register in Alabama Buys." The older STAARS Vendor Self Service (VSS) is now only for payees who are not bidding (grants, reimbursements, non-contract payments).

Have this ready

• Legal business name and Tax ID (FEIN/EIN, or SSN for a sole proprietor)
• Business address, phone, and a monitored email address (the state communicates with vendors by email)
• The commodity codes that best describe what you sell (the legacy STAARS FAQ tells vendors to pick "the commodity codes that BEST describe the goods or services you provide"; the exact code set Alabama Buys uses was not confirmed)
• Contact person who will handle bids
• Banking/W-9 details may be requested for payment; the exact list was not confirmed from an official source

Steps

1. Go to Alabama Buys at alabamabuys.gov and open the supplier registration page (link above).
2. Create your supplier account and fill in company, tax ID, address, and contact details.
3. Choose the commodity codes that match your goods or services so you are matched to the right solicitations.
4. Submit the registration and watch your email for confirmation.
5. Browse Public Solicitations, log in to download full documents, and submit responses through Alabama Buys before the deadline.

After you register

• Keep your email and contacts current; notices and addenda go to the address on file.
• Review your commodity codes when you add products or services.
• If you already had a STAARS VSS account, that does not register you to bid; bidding happens in Alabama Buys.

Watch out for

• Two systems: Alabama Buys (bidding) vs. STAARS VSS (payments only). Registering in the wrong one means you miss bids.
