How to Register as a Vendor in Alaska

What it's for

IRIS Vendor Self Service (VSS) is how businesses register with the State of Alaska, get a vendor number, respond to solicitations online, and get paid. Bids and RFPs over $100,000 for supplies and services are posted on the state's Online Public Notices (OPN) system, which anyone can browse.

Have this ready

• Legal business name and Taxpayer ID (FEIN/EIN; SSN or ITIN for individuals). The state runs an IRS TIN match against your legal name, so they must match exactly.
• A valid Alaska business license (required to be awarded a contract)
• Addresses: at minimum an active payment address and ordering address
• Email address(es) for state communications
• Commodity codes: Alaska uses NIGP codes; look yours up before starting
• Business classification (e.g., corporation, LLC, sole proprietor)

Steps

Per the state's VSS "Create a New Account" guide:

1. Go to iris-vss.alaska.gov and choose to register. VSS is available 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Alaska Time, seven days a week.
2. Accept the terms and review the FAQ.
3. Search for your business by Taxpayer ID or business name (individuals use last name and last 4 of SSN) so you don't create a duplicate.
4. Create your user ID and password. Write them down.
5. Open the verification email and use its link to continue registration.
6. Log in, select your tax ID type and business classification, and verify identity.
7. Add addresses (administrative, ordering, payment, billing) and email contacts.
8. Select your commodity (NIGP) codes and business types.
9. Review the summary and submit. The Division of Finance verifies it; record your new vendor code.

Prefer paper? You can instead send the State of Alaska Substitute W-9 to the Vendor Help Desk by email or fax.

After you register

• Watch OPN for notices; you can set up RSS or email alerts from its Advanced Search.
• When responding in VSS, attachments are limited to 2 MB per file and 5 MB per response.
• Address changes go to the Vendor Help Desk: (907) 465-5555, doa.dof.vendor.helpdesk@alaska.gov.
• Keep your Alaska business license current.
• Renewal of the VSS account itself was not described on official pages checked.

Watch out for

• Construction and DOT are separate: the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) handles construction and posts its own procurements at dot.alaska.gov/procurement/.
• Mixed notice feed: OPN includes every type of public notice, not just bids. Filter by type/category.
• Alaska bidder preference: qualifying Alaska businesses get a 5% evaluation preference; out-of-state bidders should factor this in.
• Paid third-party "registration services" are not needed. Registration is free.
